Coming to Canada from Italy in 1961 Tony and Gino Mucci rented farmland on share until they were able to purchase their first 21 acres of land in 1963. They successfully grew a variety of vegetables on this land until they purchased additional land and began to focus their efforts on tomatoes. Building their first wooden frame poly greenhouses in 1969 they soon went on to build a 4 acre glass range in 1975 to the surprise of many of their neighbouring farmers and friends. “They thought we were crazy ” says Tony of that first four acre glass range. Four acres was a large project on its own but four acres of glass was even more surprising. The years following that build were tough with the mortgage crisis raising interest rates as high as 25% and increases in fuel and labour costs but they pushed through crediting their success to new tomato varieties and technology that improved yields. Further growth of the family business progressed throughout the years as more land was purchased and greenhouses were built. Taking control of packing and marketing Mucci Pac and Mucci International Marketing were formed in ’92 and ’96 respectively followed by additional greenhouse expansion in ’97 and warehouse expansion in ’98. Five acre additions were the norm at that time but with a new marketing company and a packing line to fill they took another risk and decided to build 20 acres of poly greenhouses. Today Tony and Gino’s children have joined the family business and remain true to their parent’s entrepreneurial spirit with subsequent builds and the expansion of Mucci International Marketing. Tony and Gino are still active in the family business growing cocktail cucumbers at the home farm while their children take care of the new greenhouses and the marketing company. The farms are fruitful and Mucci International Marketing has continued its growth now representing over 400 acres of Ontario greenhouse vegetables to markets across North America.
In 1958, Mário José Basso, from the municipality of Antônio Prado, began working on the production of seeds and grains at Fazenda Santo Amaro, located today in the municipality of Many Capões, formerly the district of Vacaria in Campos de Cima da Serra. In the 1980s, his son Raul Basso, recently graduated in Agricultural Engineering, joined the farm's production and dedicated himself to direct planting, pioneering this technique in the region. Over the years, Raul has increasingly improved the crop rotation method, using 50% grasses and 50% legumes during summer cultivation, achieving high productivity and production stability. This is how the company Sementes com Vigor was born on the farm. We serve a large part of Brazil, such as Goiás, São Paulo, Matro Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Diversity is the essence of the crops at Fazenda Santo Amaro. During the winter, we work with wheat crops, white oats, black oats, barley, canola, peas and linseed. In the summer, soybeans, black beans, carioca beans, corn and popcorn are produced. Due to better nutrient cycling on the property, we produce Aberdeen Charolais and Crioulo PO and PC animals.
Eagle Lake Nurseries Ltd. was incorporated in 1970 by Tony and Anne Heuver. Today their daughter Anita Heuver has continued the family tradition and is a partner in the company. The nursery has 500 acres of field grown caliper trees and shrubs 30 acres of container grown shrubs and pot-in-pot trees 300 acres in crop rotation and greenhouses for propagation and perennial production. Eagle Lake Nurseries main market area is Calgary and area but we also ship throughout Alberta B.C. and Saskatchewan as well as Montana Idaho Wyoming North Dakota and Alaska. We have very strict criteria; economic ecological and ethical factors are all considered but the special requirements of the horse are most important. We visit the majority of the farms growing feeds for us and develop an understanding with the farmers concerned to ensure the very best standards are met. We never substitute ingredients in our blended products or use any fillers or bulking materials.
