Castello di Meleto - Viticola Toscana Società Agricola
Viticola Toscana is a joint-stock company established in 1968 on the initiative of an important Milanese publisher, Comm. Gianni Mazzocchi, President of Editoriale Domus and therefore at the time publisher of two important magazines: Quattrosoldi and Quattroruote. Launches a public subscription on Quattrosoldi proposing the creation of a joint-stock company to acquire a farm in Maremma. The immediate success was such (over 1,500 subscriptions) that with the subscriptions part of the Ricasoli property was also acquired at that time for sale in Chianti: the Meleto Farm covering 1,400 hectares - many farmhouses, the Meleto Castle, the Parish Church of Spaltenna . An important work of agricultural transformation began between 1968 and 1972 during which Viticola Toscana planted 180 hectares of vineyards in Chianti, then built a large winemaking cellar and began the production of Chianti Classico Docg wine. Today, 50 years later, Tuscan winemaking has profoundly changed the territory of this area of Chianti which has always been considered "disadvantaged" because it is further from the roads normally traveled by tourists: the sharecropping that had caused the abandonment of these lands has been replaced by economical management, the farmhouses have been renovated and those around the Castle transformed into a farmhouse. The soil is mainly made up of Alberese marl and calcareous marl: it is on these arid and stony soils that the vine produces its best fruit, rich in natural scents and aromas. Castello di Meleto mainly produces typical wines of the Chianti Classico DOCG, a modern intriguing Spumante Brut Rosé, two characteristic and distinct types of Grappa, an Extra Virgin Olive Oil from organic farming as well as a Cinta Senese pig farm.
